Mizzen Education Out-of-School Time App Privacy Policy

 

1. We Take Privacy Seriously

Mizzen Education Inc., a Delaware corporation (“MEI”), is a non-profit education technology organization providing high-quality out-of-school-time teaching and learning content for youth development professionals via its free digital library of activity plans, curricula and professional development tools and resources.  This content is provided via MEI’s mobile and web-based application (the “App”).

MEI understands our responsibility to both support the effective use of student information and safeguard student and user privacy and information security. 

2. Users

The primary users of the App will be educators, volunteers, program staff, and other adult supervisors and front-line providers of out-of-school time programs. MEI may also be used by parents or guardians engaged in supplemental at-home education or home schooling. Students will not and do not have access to the App. 

3. Collection of Personal Information

3.1 Information Provided to Us

The App collects personal information to provide users with the product and/or service requested, in this case certain class management functions such as attendance taking. 

  • User Registration and Profile Information: We collect information about the user when an account is created for use of the App, which may include your name, title, email address, organization affiliation, state, username and password (stored as cryptographic hashes). We may also receive personal information from your organization, which may include name, title, email address, and organization affiliation, to create a user account for you. 
  • Creating a Team Account: To the extent Mizzen is used in connection with an out-of-school program, we collect information during the application sign-up process to gather information about the organization which will be utilizing the application. This information may include the organization name, state, city, program size, organization type, and role. 
  • Creating a Group: The App organizes students into groups. A group contains the number of students in a class and certain demographic characteristics of such students. The information collected is also focused on logistical information used to manage each group, which may include group name, school, age range, start date and end date, and start time and end time. No personally identifiable information is collected from students as part of the group creation process. 
  • Taking Attendance: Users of the App have the option of taking attendance during each session the group meets by counting the aggregate number of students present in class that day (optional). 
  • Aggregated Data Reporting: Anonymized, aggregated data will be used to create reports for MEI staff as well as content providers to get a better sense of how programs and learning resources are performing. 

3.2 Information We Collect from Use of Our Services

We collect computer metadata and content to customize, improve, and maintain the products and services. When one uses the App, we automatically collect certain information from it through MixPanel (www.mixpanel.com), a business analytics company. Please review their Privacy Policy

MixPanel tracks user interactions with web and mobile applications, including information about the user experience such as IP address, operating systems, pages viewed, and time spent. A user may decline to provide such information to us and/or disable cookies in their browser, although some of the features or services may not function properly as a result, and some services may not be available. We do not sell or license information to third parties. General Information is shared with third parties that fund MEI, which, in turn, support the App. We collect the minimum information needed for the optimal operation of the App. MixPanel  will have access to personal information and will be bound by contracts with us to use the information in accordance with the App Privacy Policy.   

4. Children's Privacy

MEI does not intend for the App to be used by individuals under the age of majority within the jurisdiction within which they reside without the supervision of a parent or guardian of majority age. MEI relies upon such parents or guardians to determine if the App is appropriate for the viewing, access, or participation by such individuals under the age of majority. If an individual under the age of majority uses the App, such individual may only use the App under the supervision of a parent or guardian of majority age. 

MEI does not seek or knowingly collect any personal information about children under 13 years of age. If MEI becomes aware that it has unknowingly collected personal information from a child under the age of 13, MEI will make commercially reasonable efforts to delete such information from our database. 

If you are the parent or guardian of a minor child who has provided MEI with personal information, you may contact MEI using the information below to request it be deleted. 

For the purpose of this Privacy Policy, “personal information means information that tells MEI specifically who the user is, such as the user’s name, phone number, email, state, and possibly information relating to the user’s interaction with and use of the App. 

5. Information Security

Information security is very important to us. We use a combination of internal processes, technology, and physical security controls to help protect personal information from unauthorized access, disclosure, use, or modification. To help protect the privacy of the information collected by the App, we employ encryption in data transmission and storage. We have internal policies and processes directed towards limiting access to personal information to our employees, contractors, and agents who need to know. 

Please be aware, however, that despite our efforts, no security measures are perfect or impenetrable and no method of data transmission can be guaranteed against any interception or other type of misuse. 

6. Transfer of Information

MEI only shares information in the ways described in this Privacy Policy. We do not sell or license information to third parties. General Information is shared with third parties that fund MEI, which, in turn, support the App. We collect the minimum information needed for the optimal operation of the App and the App. MixPanel will have access to your information and will be bound by contracts with us to use the information in accordance with this Privacy Policy. 

7. Applicable Jurisdictions

This Policy applies to our end users and to visitors to the App, which for purposes of this Agreement is located in the State of California, USA. We do not represent that it complies with privacy laws outside the United States of America. 

8. Information for California Residents

The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), effective January 1, 2020, is a California bill that enhances privacy rights and consumer protections for residents of California. 

CCPA establishes guidelines for a consumer’s rights to control the use, deletion, access and portability of their private information (PI). 

The App complies with consumer’s rights to use, deletion, access, and portability of private information (PI) in accordance with the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 (CCPA), California Civil Code Section § 1798.140. California residents can make such requests by contacting us at the information below.
