Show children the cover of the book. Invite children to name the person pictured and then introduce him as George Washington.
Explain that George Washington was the first president of the United States. Tell them that he lived a long time ago.
Ask children if they’ve heard about George Washington and the cherry tree. Briefly summarize the story that Washington cut down a cherry tree with his new hatchet. When his father asked him if he knew who had hurt the tree, he said, “I can’t tell a lie,” and admitted that he had done it. Tell students that the story is not true, but its purpose is to show how honest and brave he was.
Tell children that today they’re going to learn some true facts about Washington and his life. Read aloud the picture book. Pause to identify locations described in the book on the U.S. map. (Washington’s boyhood home was at Ferry Farm in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Later, he lived at Mount Vernon, outside of Washington, D.C.) After each 2-page spread, ask children questions to check for understanding such as:
- What did Washington do when he was little?
- Where did he live?
- What did Washington do on this page?
- Why do you think he did this?
Ask: \"Did something in the true story of George Washington show that he was honest and brave?\" Give children a moment to share their ideas.
Separate children into small teams. Give each team a large sheet of paper. Tell them that they’re going to make their own cherry tree story about Washington.
- Have students work together to draw a large tree with leaves and cherries.
- On the trunk, branches, and cherries, encourage children to write or illustrate details about Washington, such as facts about his life and personal qualities. For younger children, you may wish to work with them and have them tell you the details to include.
Call on teams to share and talk about their cherry trees.
If time permits, close the activity with a group discussion. Say:
- Adjectives are words like tall and nice that we use to describe people and things. What are some other adjectives you would use to describe Washington?
- What would you say to or ask Washington if you could meet him?
- Why do you think we learn about people like Washington who lived a long time ago?

Have children lie on large pieces of roll paper. Children take turns tracing one another’s outlines. Direct children to color and add features to their outlines to represent George Washington. Ask them to add details about his life around or on their figures. Challenge older children to write a dialogue box for their figure, e.g., “I am George Washington. I …”

Have children work in small groups to explore George Washington’s boyhood home at Ferry Farm or his adult home at Mount Vernon. Invite them to draw pictures of 1 of his homes. Ask younger children what they liked about the home or what they thought it would be like to live there. Ask older children to write a short description of the home and to name 3-5 things that they learned about. (See links below.)

Ask older children to read sections of text from an early reader or chapter book about George Washington. Have them write down key events described in their text. Arrange the events in an illustrated class timeline about Washington’s life. (Adapt this activity to younger children by identifying details from the picture book.) Suggested nonfiction titles:
