reDiscover Center’s Activity Guides require tools to work with materials. We recommend using Canary Cutters to cut cardboard sheets and materials. Students will need to be trained on how to use the canary cutter to help them with crafting and tinkering projects.

Materials

Each student needs the following materials to receive proper tool training.

1 Canary Cutter
1 Cardboard box or sheet (recycle one from packages! Up to 15 x 15 in. in size, but can be smaller.)
1 Ruler/Straight Edge
1 Pen/Marker
*OPTIONAL - 1 Pair of Gloves

Directions

Before any maker activity, students will set up their workstations to protect their table surface. Watch \"Tiny Techniques - How to Protect Your Workspace\" to give students orientation on how to cover their workstations.
After setting up the tables, gather the necessary materials. Watch \"Tiny Techniques - How to Use the Canary Cutter\" with your students to learn about Canary Cutter Safety.
Review \"Canary Cutter - Tool Training PDF\". Let students take a cardboard box and cut the cardboard down into pieces.

Questions to ask to facilitate observations:

“Do you see the sharp parts on the canary cutter? How sharp is it?” Encourage the students to lightly tap the sides of the blade carefully to examine the blade.

“Where should you place your non-moving hand (the one not holding the tool) while you are cutting the cardboard?”

Draw a straight line down one of the cardboard pieces and use the canary cutter to cut the line.
Draw a curved line on another piece of cardboard and use the canary cutter to cut the curve.

As you are going over Tool Safety protocols and tips, let your students practice putting materials together with hot glue.
