Landmarks
Weather

Prepare a few facts about California, such as these:

It is the most populated state.
It is located along the Pacific Ocean.
San Francisco is known for the Golden Gate Bridge.

Ask students what they know about California. If they need prompting, discuss with them the facts from Preparation.
Tell students that in this activity they will work in groups to research 1 aspect of California and make a poster and presentation about it. Then, they will give the presentation to the group.
Divide students into small groups. Assign each group 1 of the categories you wrote on the board. Have them research that aspect about California and prepare the presentation about it. Prompt students with questions to help guide their research, such as these:
- What are some of the major events that happened in California's history? How did these events help make the state into what it is today?
- What rivers run through California?
- What are some famous bridges and buildings in California?
- What are cable cars, and why are they important?
- What are some major industries Californians work in?
Circulate around the room, offering guidance as needed.
Pass out the art supplies. Have each group use the art paper and other supplies to make a poster about the aspect of California they researched.
Reconvene as a whole group. Have each group give its presentation and show its poster. Encourage students to say what they liked about or learned from each other's presentations.
To wrap up, discuss with students what they learned from this activity. Ask:
- What did you learn about California that you did not know before?
- Why is California important to the history of the United States?
- Do you think California would be an interesting place to live or visit? Why?
