Begin the activity by writing or displaying these statistics on the whiteboard. (Note: The numbers are approximations or estimates; sources vary on exact totals.)
Military Deaths in World War I:
United States: 116,000
Germany: 1.8 million
Russia: 1.7 million
France: 1.3 million
British Empire: 908,000
Austria-Hungary: 1.2 million
Italy: 650,000
Ottoman Empire: 325,000
Ask students what they think could have caused World War I, which led to over 8 million deaths. Explain that there were multiple factors that led to war, including ethnic tensions, nationalism, imperialism, militarism, and the alliance system. All these contributed to the outbreak of war in Europe in 1914. Review these terms if students are unclear about their meanings. Point out that the United States was neutral until 1917 when it joined the side of the Allies.
Tell students that today they will be learning about the causes of World War I and writing a rap song to show what they've learned.
Show students the video “What Caused the First World War?”
After the video, discuss with students the key content and the reasons that the United States joined the Allies in the war effort in 1917. Be sure to highlight the following events:
- The sinking of the Lusitania by a German submarine
- The Zimmerman note
- Growing anti-German feelings
Divide the class into small groups of 4 students, and distribute the materials to each group.
Have each group dig deeper into the causes of World War I, with each group member taking 1 of the 4 major reasons (militarism, alliances, imperialism, and nationalism) and researching key people and events.
Ask students to work together to write and perform a rap song that clearly explains the causes, key people, and events of World War I. Suggest generic music for their performances; see the Preparation section. Encourage students to be creative.
Reconvene the whole group. Provide an opportunity for each group to share their rap song.
(Optional) Record rap songs so that they can be played back and evaluated by the audience to make sure that they cover all the causes of World War I.
