Ask students what they know about the state in which they live. If they need prompting, provide some details you researched earlier.
Tell students that in this activity they will work in groups to research a state. Then, they will create a presentation about the state to give in front of the whole group.
Divide students into groups of 3 or 4. Have groups decide on a state to learn about, plan their presentation, and conduct their research. Prompt students with questions, such as these:
- What is the land like in the state you chose? Does it have mountains? A seacoast? Plains? Forests?
- What are the major cities in this state? What are these cities like?
- What kinds of work do people there do?
- What sports, games, or recreational activities do the people enjoy?
Circulate around the room, offering guidance as needed.
Pass out the art supplies. Have each group use the art paper and other supplies to make a poster about the state they are researching. They may draw the state, the types of products the state produces, or anything else that represents the state. Remind students to make sure to leave space for words.
Reconvene as a whole group. Have groups make their presentations. Encourage students to say what they liked about or learned from other groups’ presentations.
To wrap up, discuss with students what they learned from this activity. Ask:a. What makes the state you chose important to the nation?b. How is the state different from the state in which you live?c. Of all the states presented today, which 1 would you most like to visit? Why?
