Reflect - 5 minutes
- Distribute scrap paper.
- Invite a volunteer to the front.
- Have the volunteer notate three actions.
- Peers should dance the actions.
- Repeat twice.
Outcomes to look for:
- Students can use notation accurately.
- Students’ movements logically represent their symbol.
Engage – 5 minutes
- Post the chart paper with notations.
- Distribute the students’ notation reference sheets.
- Ask students to use their sheets to complete the dance.
- Once a student figures it out, ask them to demonstrate.
Extend I - 30 minutes
- Tell students that you will play a snippet of several different songs. They should listen and select the one to which they would like to choreograph a dance.
- Play 30-seconds clips of the songs selected during Preparation.
- Group the students based on song selection.
- Have each group decide on an experience that their choreography will symbolize. TIP: Remind students about The Cocoon choreography from the previous session.
- Provide time for students to listen to the music, choreograph a short dance, and notate their choreography.
Expand I - 10 minutes
- Have each group perform their choreography.
