Read and familiarize yourself with the activity steps. You may wish to conduct the activity in the school library or media center.

Obtain a copy of the book Dreams of Freedom in Words and Pictures by Amnesty International and review its contents. Also review the last pages of the book, which presents biographical information about the people whose quotes are cited.

Gather students around you and introduce the book you will be reading, Dreams of Freedom in Words and Pictures.
Read the book aloud, or consider passing the book around the group. You may invite each student to read aloud 1 or 2 pages.
Point out that the book features quotes from various people. Explain that most of these people chose to fight to achieve their dreams of freedom, not only for themselves but for others. Show students the back pages of the book, where information about these people is presented.
Tell students that today they will each research 1 of the people whose words are cited in the book. At the end of the session, they will read the book again with a new perspective on its meaning.
Have students form pairs, with or without your guidance. Consider encouraging younger students to pair with older, more experienced students.
Turn to the end of the book. Review with the group the names and brief biographies of the people whose quotes are cited in the book. Invite each student pair to claim 1 of these people and learn more about him or her.
Have students search online for information about the person they selected, or if you are in the library, have them use printed reference sources. Tell students to take notes and to prepare a few facts or some biographical information about the person to share with the group.
Circulate among the group, and offer assistance and suggestions as needed. If students struggle to find relevant information about the person they selected, allow them to research another person cited in the book. They may also research Amnesty International, the organization that published the book.
When students are ready, read Dreams of Freedom in Words and Pictures again. This time, when you read a quote, invite the pairs who conducted the relevant research to share the information they learned.
Wrap up the activity with these questions:
- The book identifies many rights that all people should have. Do you agree with this selection of rights? Would you replace some rights with others?
- Do you agree that human rights are worth fighting for?
- What did you learn in today's activity?
