Obtain a copy of \"Seeds of Change: Wangari's Gift to the World,\" by Jen Cullerton Johnston. Review its contents and plan to read it aloud. If this book is not available, consult with the school librarian or social studies teacher to find an alternative picture book that illustrates the importance of education.

Gather children around you and introduce the book you will be reading, \"Seeds of Change: Wangari's Gift to the World.\" Show the cover and ask the group to predict the meaning of the title.
Read each page as you display the pictures. Take time to discuss the section in which Wangari is admitted to school in Kenya. Point out that in many countries, not all children are allowed to go to school. In the United States, though, children have the right to 12 years of education.
Discuss how Wangari came home to Kenya to help people learn about plants and nature. Ask children what they would encourage others to learn. Have them think of subjects that they know and that they think of as useful for other children to know. Consider these ideas:
- Letters and words
- Numbers and arithmetic
- Songs, perhaps with hand gestures or dance steps
- Games or sports to play
- Arts and crafts
Have each child select 1 of the subjects listed on the board, and then group or pair children together by the subjects they chose. Tell each group to make a poster or drawing to teach others about their subject. Alternatively, they could prepare a short presentation to teach a song or demonstrate an arithmetic problem.
Distribute paper, colored pencils, and markers, and invite groups to begin their work. If children want to teach others with a verbal presentation, have them rehearse their presentation in a quiet corner of the room.
Circulate among the group and offer assistance and suggestions as needed. For children who are not yet writing on their own, you may offer to write a caption or narrative text. If children struggle to express their ideas, suggest they simplify their plans. A useful poster could show the letters of the alphabet, the numbers 1 to 20, or a drawing of children throwing a baseball or football.
When children are ready, reconvene the whole group. Invite each group or pair to the front to present what they want to teach and to show any artwork they created.
Wrap up the activity with these questions:
- How did you learn the information that you taught today?
- Why do you think learning new things is important?
- What did you learn in today's activity?
