For the whole group:

Spelling Words Handout (see attached PDF file)

100 large index cards or sturdy sheets of paper

For each student:

Pen or pencil for keeping score

Read and familiarize yourself with the entire activity.

Write capital letters on 85 index cards or sheets of paper. Keep any remaining cards or sheets available as extras for students to use during the game. Follow this distribution:

6 cards for E

5 cards for A, I, N, O, R, S, and T

4 cards for C, D, L, and P

3 cards for B, F, G, H, M, and U

2 cards for V, W, and Y

1 card for J, K, Q, and X

Tell students that today they will participate in a spelling bee, but with a twist. Every student will be responsible for at most 1 letter of each word, and they will use cards to spell the words out.
Distribute the letter cards evenly and randomly among the students. Each student should have at most 4 cards with no repeated letters. If the group is smaller than 22 students, then some cards will be left over. Place these cards on a table, and tell students they may exchange any of their cards for one of the cards on the table at any time during the spelling bee.
Call out a trial word, such as “patience.” Tell students to see if they have a letter card that could be used to spell this word. If so, they should hold the card in front of them and align themselves with a group to spell the word. Tell students that when they join a group, they will need to discuss and agree on the correct spelling of the word. If disagreements arise, students may leave the group and join a new group. They should always try to spell a word correctly.
Discuss any questions that students may have. Tell students that they may trade letters with one another at any time during the session. Dictionaries and electronic devices are not allowed.
Play rounds of the game by calling out words from the list, 1 word after another. After each word, review all groups of students who have attempted to spell the word. If a group of at least 4 students has attempted to spell a word with some letters missing, allow that group to write the missing letters on blank cards to complete the word.
Award 1 point to any student who is on a team that correctly spells a word. Do not penalize students who are on a team that does not guess the spelling of a word or who incorrectly spells a word.
After a few rounds, and when students seem to understand the rules and strategies of the game, try announcing 2 or 3 spelling words at the same time. Students may choose which of the words they want to spell.
To close the session, have students tally their points and then find and declare the winner.
