Ask students to think about planning an international trip to a new country. Have volunteers share ideas about things they will need to consider when planning this trip, examples include:
- Flights
- Passports
- Accommodations
- Possible language barriers
- Types of food available in the new country
- Sights to visit
- Recreational activities
- Geography
- Climate of the destination country
- Costs and budget
Create a list on the board as students share their ideas.
Display the world map or globe. Invite students to point out the continent of South America.
Divide students into pairs. Explain that today, they will be working together to plan a family trip to a country in South America.
Have them begin by selecting a country in South America they would like to visit.
Display the web links and articles on the board, or send the list electronically to students (see the Preparation section). Tell them this is a suggested list of travel websites to help them get started. Explain that they will need to search to find information on their assigned city. If necessary, show them how to enter cities into the search fields.
Have students plan a 5-day trip to their selected country. Tell them to create a 5-column chart in their notebooks. Then, have them fill in their travel plan for each day of the trip. Remind them to include:
- Flights
- Hotel/Accommodations
- Sights to see, places to visit, or activities to do each day
Reconvene the whole group and ask volunteers to share their travel plans.
Wrap up the activity with a group discussion. Ask:
- What did you find most interesting in the country you researched in South America?
- After hearing everyone’s presentations, where in South America do you most want to visit, and why?
- Why do you think it is important to learn about other countries?

Instead of a family vacation, have students plan a backpacking trip for college students to the country of their choice. If they would like an extra challenge, give them a budget for this trip as well.
