Read through and familiarize yourself with the entire activity.

Gather a variety of picture books about Benjamin Franklin. (See Materials). Leave the books in a central place so the children can take and return them by themselves.

Gather all other needed materials.

Ask the children if they have heard of Benjamin Franklin. If they need prompting, tell them that Franklin helped the United States become a nation. He was also an inventor, scientist, and writer, and he had many other major accomplishments that helped the United States and the world.
Tell the children that in this activity, you will read them a book about Benjamin Franklin. Then, they will work in groups to make a poster about him.
Read the book you selected about Benjamin Franklin to the group. (See the suggested titles in Preparation.) Ask the children questions about what they learned, such as these:
- What kinds of jobs did Franklin have?
- What are some of the things Franklin invented?
- What did Franklin do to help the United States become its own country?
Divide the children into groups of 3 or 4. If possible, group readers with nonreaders. Give the children time to look through the books on Benjamin Franklin to learn more about him, what he looked like, what he invented, what he achieved, etc.
Have each group plan their poster. Prompt the children with questions, such as these:
- What are the most important things to know about Benjamin Franklin?
- What will be the main words or picture on your poster?
- What other words or pictures do you want to include?
- Who will make which part of the poster?
Circulate around the room, offering guidance as needed.
Pass out the art supplies and have each group make a poster about Franklin. Circulate among groups while they work, making sure they are including appropriate information about Benjamin Franklin.
Hang all of the posters around the room, and have the children do a gallery walk.
Reconvene as a whole group. Encourage the children to say what they like about or learned from other groups’ posters.
To wrap up, discuss with the children what they learned from this activity. Ask:a. What did your group include in your poster about Benjamin Franklin? Why did you include those things?b. How are the other groups’ posters different? How are they the same?c. Why is Franklin important to the United States?d. What kinds of things do we have today because of Franklin’s inventions and hard work?
