Several basketballs, or poles TIP: If space limitations prevent bouncing basketballs, then substitute with dowels or unsharpened pencils. Replace the videos with STOMP – sticks (press workshop).

Engage – 5 minutes:
- Partner students.
- With a partner, students make their favorite sound. Their partner should name the sound.
- Rotate partners 3 or 4 times.
- Ask:
Explore I - 10 minutes:
- Say, “Sound is what we hear. Music is sound that is ordered, or has a pattern. One element of the pattern is called the beat. It’s a constant that allows musicians to create different sounds but still maintain order.”
- Play Google metronome at 72 BPM. Begin stepping in place. Invite students to join.
- Instruct students to match their movement to the clicks as you move the BPM up and down.
- Pause metronome.
- Ask:
- Say, “This is the tempo – how fast or slow the beat is played.”
- Say, “We count the clicks by saying 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4 and so on. By counting the beat, we stay together.”
- Play the metronome and practice counting as a class.
- Say, “Jazz musicians use the beat to create interesting rhythmic patterns. Rhythm is a sound pattern. Let’s make a simple rhythmic pattern.”
- Divide the class into 4 groups. Assign each group a movement:
- Play the metronome at 80 BPM.
- Continue until all student movements are matching the clicks before stopping.
- Give groups two counts instead of one:
- Play the metronome at 80 BPM.
- Continue until all student movements are matching the clicks before stopping.
- Repeat the process. This time allow students to select their count and their move. Remind students to be consistent, making the same move on the same count.
Extend I - 30 minutes:
- Play selected video.
- Ask:
- Say, “In the video, people used objects to create unique rhythmic patterns. They acted like jazz musicians. They chose a tempo, or the speed of the beat, and made rhythmic patterns which created a song. Now, it’s your turn.”
- Direct students into groups.
- As a team, they must create a 1-minute rhythmic pattern with the given items. They can use any basketball skills, but the movements must be with the beat at the given tempo. Encourage creative use of the given items, poles and surrounding area.
- Provide students with paper and pencil for note-taking.
- Provide at least 25 minutes for students to create and practice. Remind students to nod (or tap their foot) to find and feel the beat before adding any moves. Play metronome at 72 BPM.
Elaborate -10 minutes:
- Have each team perform their rhythmic routine.
- While watching, peers should attempt to figure out the pattern.
- After each performance, have the group share their pattern.
Reflect - 5 minutes:
- Invite students to sit in a circle.
- Instruct students to think of another sound-producing movement – they can sit or stand to make the movement – and on which count or counts they will move.
- Tell students you will begin by clapping. They should listen to you counting and come in when ready on their chosen count.
- Remind students to nod (or tap their foot) to find and feel the beat before adding any moves. Play metronome at 72 BPM.
- Count students in.
- Continue for 30 seconds after every student has joined the rhythm.
