Prepare a few facts about the Pacific Northwest, such as these:

The Pacific Northwest is made up of 3 states—Oregon, Washington, and Alaska.
All 3 states in the Pacific Northwest have coastline along the Pacific Ocean.
The Pacific Northwest has active volcanoes and vast forests.

Ask students what they know about the Pacific Northwest. If they need help, share with them the facts you prepared.
Tell students that in this activity they will work in groups to research the Pacific Northwest and create cards with drawings about the state they research. Then, they will combine their cards with the other groups to make and play a memory game.
Divide students into small groups. Assign each group 1 of the categories you wrote on the board. Have them research that information about all 3 states in the Pacific Northwest. Prompt students with questions to help guide their research, such as these:
- What are some of the major events in the history of the Pacific Northwest?
- What are some large cities in the Pacific Northwest? What important buildings, statues, or other landmarks are found in these cities, or what businesses are based there?
- What lakes, rivers, mountains, and volcanoes are located in the Pacific Northwest?
- What are some major industries in the Pacific Northwest?
- What famous people come from the Pacific Northwest?
Circulate around the room, offering guidance as needed.
Ask students to take notes on the most important information they find. Tell them they will be illustrating this information.
Pass out the index cards and art supplies. Have each group use the cards and other supplies to create 2 identical cards illustrating a landmark, geographical feature, etc. from their research. Ask them to label each picture with what it is and the state it comes from. Have them glue a second note card on the back of each card so they cannot see through the card. (Make sure all the groups have the same side of the second card facing up, so the cards look identical when they are face down.)
Have each group make 3-4 pairs of cards, depending on the size of the whole group.
Reconvene as a whole group and collect all the cards. Lay them face down, randomly, in rows on a table or the floor. Have students from each group take turns flipping over 2 cards each, trying to form a pair. Each time a student makes a pair, have them read the information aloud, award their group 1 point, and remove those cards from the game.
Continue as time allows and determine a winning group.
To wrap up, discuss with students what they learned from this activity. Ask:
a. How are Washington, Oregon, and Alaska the same? How are they different?b. Which state in the Pacific Northwest do you think would be the most interesting place to live or visit? Why?
c. If you do not live in the Pacific Northwest, how are the states there different from the state where you live?
