(Optional) Red hat and coat (like the character Carmen Sandiego) or a costume befitting another world traveler or explorer

For the whole group:

World map or globe
Large sheet of paper (the size of a wall map)
Timer

For each team:

World atlas (hard copy or online)
Notecards
Pens/Pencils
Sheet of colored construction paper (different colors for each team)
Scissors
Tape
Bell or ringer
(Optional) If using an online atlas, a device for accessing the internet such as a laptop, tablet, smartphone, or desktop computer

Read through and familiarize yourself with the entire activity.

Draw an outline of the world map on a large sheet of paper. Then, add a few guides, such as the compass rose and the equator.

Obtain world atlases from the media center or classrooms, or ensure access to an online atlas.

Gather all necessary materials.

Display the world map. Tell students that they’re going on a world tour today. (If you dressed up in a costume, introduce yourself!)
Identify the giant landmasses shown on the map as continents and review their names. Then, hang your outline map on top of it. (If you are using a globe, hang the sheet of paper on the board.)
Organize students into several small teams and distribute supplies.
Tell students that they will create their own geography game and that each of them will write a clue for the game.
Give students some time to look at the maps and key facts about each continent in the atlases. Prompt them to identify key physical features and the location of each continent. Then, have each student write one clue using a fact about a continent on the front of the notecard. (For example, “I am the smallest continent on Earth. Where/who am I?”) Have students identify the correct continent on the back of each notecard.
Have students share their note cards with their teams, review the questions, and make changes suggested by teammates.
Collect the cards. Flip through the cards to check the questions and answers. While you sort the cards, ask students to draw and cut out construction paper vehicles for traveling (e.g., plane, ship, train, car, bicycle). Explain that this vehicle will represent their team on the board as they play the game.
Draw a chart on the board to keep score. Shuffle the cards.
Introduce and explain the game: You will be reading a clue to one team at a time. Allow team members 10 seconds to discuss and decide on an answer. If correct, the team is awarded 1 point and can tape its vehicle to the appropriate continent. If incorrect, allow the first team that “rings in” to answer. Continue as long as time or questions permit.
If time permits, close the activity with a discussion. Ask:
- What was the most interesting fact you learned about a continent?
- What continent would you most like to visit and why?
- What are some ways the continents differ?
- What are some ways that they are similar?

Optional Extension 1:

Challenge students in teams to play a version of the alphabet game by taking turns naming countries on a continent that start with each letter of the alphabet. Have each team begin with a different continent and rotate through the team until students can’t think of any other countries on their assigned continent. Tell teams to appoint one student to keep a log to record the countries on each continent that they name. Call time and have teams start over on the next continent. Teams should repeat for each continent, excluding Antarctica. Ask teams to check their lists by locating the countries they named on a world map.

Optional Extension 2:

Organize the students into small groups. Assign each group one of these categories: Major Lakes and Rivers, Mountain Ranges and Highest Mountains, Deserts and Other Curious Physical Features (e.g., volcanoes, wetlands, plateaus, large grasslands, inland seas). Give them blank world maps and an atlas. Tell them to label 1-5 of their assigned features on each continent.
