Prepare a few facts about the United Kingdom and Ireland, such as these:

The United Kingdom is known for Stonehenge, Big Ben, London Bridge, and many other historic structures.
Ireland is nicknamed the Emerald Isle because of its large green fields.
Rugby is a major sport in both the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Ask students what they know about the United Kingdom and Ireland. If they need prompting, share with them the facts you prepared.
Tell students that today they will be acting as the \"tourism bureau\" for either the United Kingdom or Ireland, working in groups to research the country and then create a slideshow presentation in which they try to encourage people to visit the country.
Divide students into small groups. Assign each group 1 of the categories you wrote on the board. Have half of the groups research the category for the United Kingdom and the other half research it for Ireland. Prompt students with questions to help guide their research, such as these:
- What are some of the major events that happened in the United Kingdom's or Ireland's history? Why would these events or historic sites attract visitors?
- What are some large cities in the United Kingdom or Ireland? What fun or interesting attractions do they offer? Theaters? Beautiful architecture?
- What lakes, rivers, and mountains are found in the United Kingdom or Ireland? What can people do if they visit them?
Circulate around the room, offering guidance as needed.
Have students prepare slideshows focusing on their category and country. As students work, remind them to include text, headers, and/or pictures on their slides. Explain that headers help break up text into different subjects, which will make it easier for the rest of the group to understand each slideshow. Pictures can help illustrate points and add interest to text.
Remind groups that they are acting as their country's tourism bureau, so their slideshow should focus on what is special, unique, or interesting for visitors to see and experience in their country. It should not only include information but also use that information to encourage people to visit the United Kingdom or Ireland.
Reconvene as a whole group. Have each group present its slideshow. Encourage students to say what they liked about or learned from each other's presentations.
To wrap up, discuss with students what they learned from this activity. Ask:a. Do you think the United Kingdom or Ireland would be an interesting place to live, visit, or go to college? Why?b. If you could visit the United Kingdom or Ireland, what is the first thing you would want to do or see? Why?c. How are the United Kingdom and Ireland different from the United States or the state where you live?
