On the world map, direct students’ attention to Germany and Poland. Explain that WWII began in 1939 when Germany invaded Poland.
Provide a quick overview of the war for students:
- Adolf Hitler, the dictator of Germany and the leader of the Nazi party, wanted to conquer Europe. He also wanted to create what he considered to be the strongest race, so he wanted to exclude and eliminate minority groups, especially Jews.
- The war was fought between the Axis powers (Germany, Italy, and Japan) and the Allied powers (United States, Britain, Soviet Union, France). The war, which was the deadliest and most destructive war in history, quickly spread throughout the world.
- In addition to members of military and the government, the war directly affected civilians, including children, around world.
Tell students that in today’s activity, they will investigate and learn about children’s experiences around the world during the war.
Divide the students into 5 teams and assign each one a child or group of children to research.
Display the web links and articles on the board, or send the list electronically to students. Tell students to use these sources, or any others they might find, to learn about their assigned child or children.
Explain that they will take what they learn to create a short 3 to 5 minute play to share with the group. Their original play should include:a. An opening narration that sets the scene, including the year, location, name of the child or general description of the group, and any other necessary background information.b. Narration and dialogue that tells of the children’s experiences during the war. Tell students to write the dialogue based on their research, but they are also welcome to use direct quotes.
Reconvene the large group and call on 1 team at a time to perform their play.
After each performance, ask students to discuss how the child’s/family’s location and ethnicity affected their experience.
Wrap up the activity with a discussion:
a. How were the children’s experiences similar? How do they differ?b. How does war affect children?c. What can we learn from these stories?

Show the video “Children in WW2” as an introduction to the activity. (see link below).

Select one of the children from the list for the whole group to study. Share an overview of the child (or children’s) experience with the group. Then, divide the group into different roles such as writers, actors, props/costumes, and stage director. Have them work together to create a longer production.
