Think of examples from your own life, or the lives of friends or colleagues, to prompt a class discussion about the importance of a life vision and setting useful, supportive goals.

Ask students: “What adults do you know that seem to be genuinely happy?” Have students name or describe happy adults that they know personally. Do not allow them to cite celebrities or others known only indirectly.
Have students brainstorm possible reasons that these people feel happy, and record the ideas on the board. Possible reasons could include:
- They feel that they are living the life they want to.
- They are satisfied in their careers.
- They are satisfied in their relationships.
- They are healthy.
- They have family who care for them and whom they care for.
Tell students that in this activity, they will develop goals to help them achieve a happy, successful future for themselves. They will prepare a poster that shows their life vision, which is a set of goals for different stages of life.
To develop their life vision, have students consider what makes them happy now and what they think will make them happy in the future. Encourage them to consider happiness that is due to internal reasons (for example, loving a pet) compared to external reasons (for example, having an expensive item to impress other people). Students may also include goals for their career, a family, or personal experience. Have students record their thoughts and ideas in their notebooks and develop a plan for a poster to display their life vision.
If students need additional stimuli to develop a life vision poster, have them brainstorm words or images that represent happiness now and in the future. They may choose to model their lives as a curved timeline, as stops along a river, or as shapes arranged in a meaningful pattern. They may also include poems (either their own or from others), sentences from favorite books, or symbolic drawings or icons.
Have students make a sketch of their life vision poster, and then revise the sketch as needed. When they are ready, they may assemble the poster using craft materials, photos from magazines or newspapers, or images generated on a computer or downloaded from the internet.
Encourage students to keep their poster private. They may post it in their bedroom or locker where they will see it frequently, or keep it in a safe place, such as their bedroom closet, where they may view it from time to time.
To conclude the activity, thank students for attending, and make sure they take their posters with them. If the posters are incomplete, encourage students to complete or revise them at home or in another session at school.

This activity could last longer than one 45-minute period, as students may want to ponder their life mission overnight or throughout the week. Students may also develop their life-mission goals in electronic form, perhaps using word processing and design software.
