For the class, prepare:

Book, Action Jackson, by Jan Greenberg and Sandra Jordan
Examples of Jackson Pollock's work
Jazz music to play during painting time (optional)
Drop cloth-plastic or old sheet to cover the painting area to minimize mess to classroom
Tape to hold down the dropcloth
A large piece of white craft fabric or paper
12” X 18” pieces of watercolor paper
Washable paints
Plastic cups for paint
Yarn or string
Clothespins
Paintbrushes of assorted sizes
A few sticks
Containers of water
Hand wipes for easy clean-up

","preparation","

Get students seated in a group for discussion.

Read aloud the book, Action Jackson, to your students if you have it.

Tell them they are going to do a painting like Jackson Pollock—a “drip painting”

Have a large piece of craft fabric or paper placed on the floor on a drop cloth if you plan to do a large painting.

Put paints in plastic cups or containers and add a little water to make them “drippy”

Set out yarn, paint brushes, combs, toothbrushes, etc. ready to be used for the painting.

Once student supplies are in place, Have students pick up pieces of yarn/string with clothespins and dip yarn/string into paint.
They can use paintbrushes/combs/sticks/toothbrushes to fling, drip, and splatter paint on the paper.
Encourage painting from all 4 sides of the paper, like Jackson Pollock.
You will need to hang or allow the project to dry flat overnight
To end this activity, discuss with students the difficulties they faced when making their paintings.

If you want to keep it one large, group project, great!! If you want to cut it into smaller pieces for each student to have one, great, too!!

Have students use black paint and paintbrushes to add lines, shapes, patterns to the drip painting after it dries

If you want to add a lesson on Pollock’s use of lines, show students the different kinds of lines that can be made, like wavy lines, zig zag lines, thick/thin lines, straight lines, spiral lines, dashed lines, etc. Have them make an individual picture with different kinds of lines and color inside them.

The level of complexity will change with each grade level grouping—encourage older students to spend more time creating more dramatic effects, textures, lines
