Ask students to name a famous person that they admire, such as a sports star, musician, actor, or political leader. Then have students discuss the qualities that make this person admirable. If feasible, list some of the qualities that students suggest on the board. Examples may include athleticism, musical talent, or political principles or ideals.
Next, ask students what they think it would be like to host the famous person for dinner, or to spend time together playing video games or watching television. Lead students to recognize that we don't really know what most famous people are like as individuals, which is how we know our friends and family. We are familiar with the public images of celebrities, but not their private selves.
Tell students that today, they will be exploring their own public images. Each student will make a poster to show their best qualities and ideals that they would like others to know.
To begin, invite students to list people, places, things, or activities that they might include on their posters. Have them consider these categories:
- People in my life, including family and friends
- Activities that I enjoy, including sports, games, and hobbies
- Favorite foods, music, colors, and animals, including pets
- Accomplishments, such as awards in sports, music, or theater
- Goals or plans for the future
Next have students sketch or plan a way to organize the poster. Have them consider writing their name in the center of the poster, and then writing text and drawing pictures around the center. Students may also cut and attach photographs from old magazines, if available.
Distribute the craft materials, and have students follow their plans and begin drawing or constructing their posters.
Circulate among the students and offer advice or suggestions as appropriate. Remind students that these posters should display themselves as they would like to be viewed by others. They should not include information that they prefer to keep private.
To conclude the activity, invite volunteers to show their poster to the group and discuss its different parts and meaning. Then lead a whole-group discussion. Ask:
- What did you learn about yourself by assembling the poster?
- What did you learn about others by viewing their posters?
- Why is it important to keep some information private?
- Do you think everyone keeps the same kinds of private information? Why or why not?

As an alternative to posters about themselves, students may wish to write essays or poems, record a podcast, or act out a skit. In all cases, encourage students to share only the information about themselves that they want others to know.

Gather all materials.

Ask students to talk about the neighborhoods where they live. You may offer the following questions as prompts:
- What kind of spaces do people live in? Do they live in small houses, large houses, or apartment buildings?
- What kind of spaces do people work in? Do they work indoors or outdoors? Do they travel elsewhere or stay in the neighborhood?
- What kind of spaces do people play in? Are there parks in the neighborhood?
- How do people move from place to place? Do they use cars, buses, or trains, or do they walk?
  Extend the discussion of each question by asking “What are the best things about that?” and “How could things be better?
Tell students that in today’s activity they will be describing a way to improve their neighborhood. Or they may design or plan a brand-new neighborhood where they would like to live.
Have students work individually or in pairs to identify an improvement to their neighborhood—or if they are inspired, a plan for a brand-new neighborhood. To guide students, repeat the questions you asked to begin the activity but this time with the focus on an improvement to the neighborhood. For example, students might consider any of these ideas:
- Houses that are closer together to improve neighborliness.
- Houses that are farther apart to allow more privacy
- Apartment buildings that surround a common park or greenway
- A system of streetcars or electric buses to improve transportation
- New parks or open spaces or a neighborhood garden
- A business center or entertainment district that is set apart from the residences but within walking distance
Distribute paper and craft materials, if available, and have students create a drawing or other model to show their ideas. For example, students may draw a picture of a new park or greenway or of a street with a new streetcar traveling along it. Or students may use the craft materials to show a colorful model or a 3-dimensional model. Students may also combine their work with another group that they feel has compatible ideas.
When groups are ready, tape their models to the wall, or arrange them on a large table at the front of the room.
Reconvene the whole group. Ask each student or pair to explain their work and how it could lead to an improved neighborhood.
To conclude the activity, ask students to view all of their ideas taken together. Do they form a cohesive vision? Discuss how designing an ideal neighborhood or community can be a more difficult task than it may appear to be, in part because people have a variety of ideas and preferences for the places where they live.

Observe the room and find a few things that are the same or similar. Some examples might be:

2 pieces of chalk are small.

2 pencils are yellow.

2 plants are green.

Ask the children to look around the room and find 2 things that are the same or similar. If they need help, prompt them with a few items you observed during Preparation.
Tell the children that in this activity, they will use questions and answers to find things they have in common with other children in the group.
Distribute the Same as Me worksheet so that each child has a copy.
Model the activity with the first question by saying something like, “When I say, ‘Find someone who has the same favorite movie as you,’ walk around the room and ask each other, ‘What is your favorite movie?’” Explain that when they find someone who has the same favorite movie, they should write that child’s name on the Same as Me worksheet under the Name column alongside the trait.
Move on to the next question. Clarify to the children that there should not be any repeats; if they write down “Aiden” (for example) next to “Same favorite movie,” they should not write down Aiden’s name again. Even if Aiden fits one of the other categories, they should continue walking around the room, trying to find someone else with whom they share that trait.
Explain that you will ask many questions, so children will have a good chance of finding someone with whom they have something in common. Then, they can continue asking for a previous category and the new one at the same time.
Continue naming new categories every few minutes. As the children walk around the room asking and answering questions, circulate among them to make sure they understand the directions and to observe their progress.
After several minutes, call time.
Reconvene as a whole group. Discuss what the children found they have in common with other group members.
To wrap up, ask the children what they learned from this activity. Ask:
- What types of things did you quickly find you had in common with someone else? Who did you have them in common with?
- Were there some things that you could not find in common with anyone? Which things?
- Did you learn something that you did not know before about another child in the group? What did you learn about them?

Set a timer, so the children have a certain number of minutes before moving on to the next child.

Come up with your own set of similarities, write them on the board, and have students copy them on a piece of paper.

You may wish to invite a second adult or a responsible teen to help you lead the activity. While you interview the children in step 4, the second leader may record examples of statements that the children say.

Tell children that today they will be practicing 3 very important skills: speaking, listening, and remembering.
Have children suggest some useful rules when someone is speaking. Lead them to recognize that the most useful rules are to listen to the person and to not talk while they are speaking.
Tell children that they will each get a chance to speak to the group. While a child is speaking, everyone should listen carefully. Remind students that remembering is also a part of today’s activity.
Have children sit in a circle, and then ask for a volunteer to go first. Invite the volunteer to stand next to you, and then ask them a few questions to prompt them to talk about themselves and their lives. Consider questions like the ones listed below. In addition, to keep all children engaged, invite group members to pose their own questions to the speaker.
- What did you do at home yesterday or over the weekend?
- Do you have any pets? What are their names? Are they friendly?
- Have you visited any interesting places recently, such as a zoo, an aquarium, a park, or perhaps another city or state? Talk about the visit.
- What sports or games do you enjoy playing?
- If you could buy anything you wanted on a shopping trip, what would you buy?
After each conversation, quickly record 1 or 2 statements that the child made. Then invite the next child to speak.
After all children have spoken, tell children that it is time for the remembering portion of the activity.
Select 2 or 3 children, and ask them to stand up next to you. Then ask the group a multiple-choice question based on your notes of the conversations with these children. For example, ask: “Who has a dog that is bigger than they are? Is it Mary, Aiden, or Fiona?”
Alternatively, ask each child to state a fact or detail that they remember from 1 of the speeches. Then discuss why this detail is memorable.
Wrap up the session with a whole-group discussion about the activity. Say:
- We practiced 3 skills today: speaking, listening, and remembering. Which do you think is the most difficult of the 3 skills? Why is that? (Possible answer: Listening is the most difficult. It takes special effort to be a good listener.)
- Why do you think these 3 skills are important?
