How to Write a Blog Post

Ask for a show of hands for students who are familiar with the term blog, or blogging. Confirm or explain that a web log, or blog for short, is a personal journal that is published online. Blogs may be devoted to a specific subject, such as a sports team, a hobby, or politics. Or they may present whatever the writer chooses to share, on a regular or irregular schedule.
Ask students to describe any blogs or blog posts they have read, and to explain whether they are regular readers or casual readers of the blog.
Point out that like other types of writing, blog posts have specific features. Ask students to suggest some of these common features and record them on the board. (Posts are displayed in reverse chronological order, with the most recent post shown first; blogs generally feature a headline, the blogger’s name, a timestamp for posts, archives of old posts, and a comments section. The blog site usually has a page that provides an overview of its purpose.)
Have students work in pairs or groups of 3. Each pair should have access to a computer station with internet access.
Ask students to review some posts from an example of a blog, such as “High School Humor Blog” or another blog of interest.
Next, have students work independently or with partners on a plan for their own blog post. Post should include the features you discussed earlier.
Circulate among the groups and assist students as needed. Remind students that their blogs could be about any subject and that they can express any ideas that they choose to share with the world. If students are struggling to come up with ideas, suggest these topics:
- Your reaction to a recent game involving a favorite sports team or a national sports event, such as the World Series or the Super Bowl
- Your opinion (positive or negative) of a recent movie, television show, or concert
- An athlete, singer, or actor you think deserves more praise than they are receiving.
- A cause or charity that you endorse and that you think others should endorse as well
Reconvene the whole group. Ask for volunteers to share their ideas for blog posts and their first drafts. Thank the volunteers for sharing, and encourage them to continue developing their ideas.

Have students search the internet for blogs on subjects of special interest to them. Students can find and review blogs on almost any subject, including sports, entertainment, politics, social causes, and games of all kinds. As students review blogs, point out that the information on blogs may or may not be accurate and reliable. With only a few exceptions, blog posts are neither reviewed by experts nor checked for their accuracy.
