For each small group:

Additional books about how children can help the planet, such as more of the titles suggested for the whole group

Pieces of strong art paper or poster paper

Coloring materials such as markers, crayons, colored pencils, etc.

Construction paper

Glue, paste, or tape

Safety scissors

Read through and familiarize yourself with the entire activity.

Gather a variety of books, including picture books, about how children can help the planet. (See Materials.) Leave the books in a central place so the children can take and return them by themselves.

Gather all needed materials.

Ask the children what they do each day to help the planet. If they need prompting, suggest common activities such as recycling, turning off the water while brushing their teeth, and turning off lights that are not being used.
Tell the children that today you will read them a book about how children can help the planet. Then they will work in groups to create a poster about helping the planet.
Read a book about helping the planet to the group. (See the suggested titles in Preparation.) Ask the children questions about what they learned, such as these:
- What are some things people do each day that can hurt the planet?
- What are some ideas from the book that you can do at home to help Earth stay clean and healthy?
- Why are these actions important?
Divide the children into groups of 3 or 4. If possible, group readers with nonreaders. Give the children time to look through the books you brought. Encourage them to find important ideas in the books, such as these:
- How is pollution affecting our water and air?
- How are people's actions hurting wildlife?
- How are people's actions hurting trees and plants?
Ask groups to discuss what they want to include on their poster. Suggest that they plan to draw something kids can do to help the planet, such as recycling, planting, or keeping their neighborhood clean. Ask them to decide on any text or words they would also like to include.
Pass out the art supplies. Have each group use the art paper and other supplies to make their posters. Remind them to add the things kids can do to help the planet that they discussed, as well as any additional text. Explain that the children can cut up and attach construction paper to their posters or just draw pictures. Circulate around the room, offering guidance as needed.
Have the children tape their posters to the walls and go on a gallery walk to observe each group's work.
Reconvene as a whole group. Ask the children to say what they liked about or learned from each other's posters.
To wrap up, discuss with the children what they learned from this activity. Ask:
- What do you think is the most important thing people can do to help the planet? Why is this so important?
- What will happen if people do not take care of the planet?
- How can you help your families to \"go green\"?
