Begin the activity by displaying this quote. Invite a volunteer to read it aloud.
From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic an iron curtain has descended across the Continent. Behind that line lie all the capitals of the ancient states of Central and Eastern Europe … and the populations around them … are subject, in one form or another, not only to Soviet influence but to a very high and in some cases increasing measure of control from Moscow.
Ask students If they know who said these words, when, and what the speaker meant. Explain that the speaker is Winston Churchill, the Prime Minister of Great Britain. The quote is from his “Iron Curtain” speech, delivered in Fulton, Missouri, in 1946. Churchill was referring to the division between East (the Soviet Union and other communist countries) and West (the United States and its allies) that resulted after World War II, which drew the two superpowers and their allies into the Cold War.
Show students the video, “World War II: Its Causes, Stages and Aftermath.”
After the video, tell students that they will be producing an audio or video clip demonstrating their understanding of the causes and effects of World War II.
Discuss with students the main causes and effects of the war, listing them on the board as students call them out. Consider these examples:

Divide the whole group into pairs or small groups depending on available digital resources. Distribute the materials to each pair or group, and share the websites you reviewed earlier.
Have each group or pair create a brief audio or video clip about the key people and events of World War II, focusing on the long-term effects of these events. Suggest that students imagine themselves as documentary film makers, or as reporters for a television or radio program about world history. Also suggest that they download screenshots or stills (for a video) or they narrate an excerpt from a speech.
Reconvene the whole group. Invite each pair or group to share their audio or video clip with either the whole group or other pairs. You may want to have students vote for the best production of the day.
Lead a whole-group discussion using these or similar questions after each group or pair has presented:
a. Why do you think much of the world engaged in another world war not long after World War I? (Possible answer: There were many issues that weren’t resolved after World War I, and Germany was punished badly for its role in that war. Britain and France were too trusting of Hitler’s intentions because they did not want to go to war again.)b. How did the causes of World War II affect the outcome of the war? (Possible answer: The aggressor nations that caused the war lost in the end. This time, Germany was not punished like it was after World War I.)c. Why did the Cold War emerge? Did World War II cause it? Explain. (Possible answer: It emerged because many ideologies had grown strong after World War I. Communism seemed to be an alternative to democracy, and it attracted people of some nations.)

Have students work in pairs to write three or four interview questions and answers for the major players in World War II for the Axis and Allied Powers. Tell them to focus on questions that relate to their expectations and intended goals during the war versus what actually happened. Ask student pairs to rehearse the interview before performing it for the group.
