Introductory Activity (10 minutes):
- Explain to students that a skill scientists draw upon is clearly, while using as few words as possible, explaining a concept. They will practice this skill by playing, “I can explain it in # words or less.”
- Tell students that they will work with a partner to summarize what they’ve uncovered about Climate Change, thus far. Their writing should reference the answers to the three questions answered and lead the audience to the next question, “What is causing this Climate Change?”.
- Provide students with 4 minutes to work.
- Each group should share out their writing.
- After each share, have students place a thumbs up, for clarity and comprehensiveness, or thumbs down, for lack of clarity comprehensiveness, on their chest.
- This will allow students to vote and provide feedback without their peers seeing their responses.
I Would Expect (5 minutes):
- Give each student a notecard.
- On the notecard, they should complete the statement, “I expected to find _______, and I found _______________.”
- If time allows, have students share their notecards across groups.
Literature Review (40 minutes):
- Explain that to answer the day’s question, students will engage in a common scientific activity, conducting a literature review.
- Tell students that during a literature review, scientists review existing research on their topic. While scientists attempt to be comprehensive, reading all relevant research, today students will only need to complete a review of three different types of research.
- Have students move into three groups.
- Distribute one of the following to each group: a laptop, the articles or the charts.
- Students should have 20 minutes to review one set of research.
- Then have groups swap materials.
- Provide students with another 20 minutes to review.
- Gather notes and keep for next session.
Closing Activity (5 minutes):
- Give each student a notecard.
- On the notecard, they should complete the statement, “I expected to find _______, and I found _______________.”
- If time allows, have students share their notecards across groups.
