Ask questions to determine cause and effect relationships of electric or magnet interactions between two objects not in action with each other.

1 Magnet
1 Paper Clip
1 Nail
1 Pencil
1 Penny
1 piece of Thread
1 piece of Styrofoam cup

Review the \"Invisible forces\" (static electricity) from last week.

Tell them that they will be experimenting with a different invisible force today, a magnetic force.

Ask the students what they can name that is an attracted to a magnet.

Explain the objective of the day

Demonstrate with the first object how to use the student worksheet to keep track of their data. They can use the backside of the worksheet to write in objects that they'll want to investigate.

Brainstorm with a partner which objects will be attracted to the magnet.

Add their ideas to their Process Grid.

To begin this activity, instruct students investigate the different objects, testing to see if they are attracted to the magnet.
Ask questions to help students think about why some objects are attracted to the magnet and why other aren't.
Have students reflect in whole groups about the objects that were and weren't attracted and their conclusions (metals, not metal).
Have students add their ideas to their Process Grid.
To end this activity, discuss with students what they learned about Magnetic Attraction.
