Use the engineering design process to make a stethoscope and use it to listen to heartbeats.

For the class, prepare:

Recycled materials
Vinyl tubing
Balloons
Plastic bottles or cups
Duct tape or masking tape
Scissors
Any extra materials

For each student, prepare:

1 Straw

Make sure that the instructor/teacher knows how to build the stethoscope from the materials before beginning the activity.

Divide your students into small groups and ask them think about how to design a stethoscope using the materials provided.
Use a stethoscope to let kids listen to each other’s hearts
Have older children help younger ones, one youth assisting them to listen to one end of the stethoscope while another student holds the end to their own heart. Make sure everyone has a chance to listen
One approach is to cut off the bottom third of a water or soda bottle, then insert the vinyl tubing into the mouth of the bottle and secure it with duct tape. Applaud youth for their efforts, but don’t do the work for them.
Ask what factors could help them hear better? Reduce background noise, find the proper placement, place a hand over their other ear to eliminate excess noise
To end this activity, discuss questions with students
- What did they learn about their heartbeats?
- What difficulties they faced trying to hear their heartbeat and how to avoid disturbances in the future?
