Several boxes of straws (a store likeMichaels has a wide collection of colorful choices both in-store and online – check out the party & summer sections)
String
Tape
Tissue or wrapping paper
Scissors
Permanent marker
Stopwatch
Measuring tape
Paper for notes

Have all materials ready and accessible to students.

This activity should take place on a day where the weather permits (moderate wind, no rain, etc).

Introduction:
- Ask students what they know about kites and the properties that affect them, like wind.
- After discussing, make sure to provide this information to students:
- Have students get into small groups and then introduce the challenge: Use the materials provided to construct a kite that can make it into the sky and stay there for at least a few minutes.
- Teacher Tip: It’s important to note that not everyone will always end up with a kite that flies; the importance of this activity is to explore how and why kites fly and how they might be improved. Make sure to support students.
Brainstorm & Build:
- Give students 10 minutes to brainstorm and agree on a design as a group before they construct their kites. Have students draw out sketches of possible designs.
- Once the brainstorming is finished, let students build their kites for 15-20 minutes.
Plan & Predict :
- Bring everyone together. Ask the students to discuss how they will test their designs against each other to see which design provides the best flight.
- Discuss how they will set up the tests, so the designs can be usefully compared (use a stopwatch, compare two at a time).
- Before testing, have the students make predictions about their kites.
Test:
- Ask stude to start in the same place to get their kites in the air, assuming they will need a running start.
- Make sure that the students brought paper to write down notes and the results of their test. Students should answer the following:
- Use a stopwatch and a measuring tape to help each student gather the data they need. (Students will have to pre-measure the string they use to tell how high up the kite gets.)
Interpret & Modify:
- After the tests, ask the kids to consider the results:
- Ask students to come up with and present possible explanations.
- If there is time, students can make modifications based on variables that they believe will improve their kites. Have them repeat all of the steps, using their data sheet to record.
Wrap-up:
- Have a final discussion with students on their results, thoughts, and observations throughout the activity.
