Introduction:
- Discuss with students about what they know about helicopters and how they work.
- Provide the following information: Helicopters can fly vertically (up and down) or horizontally (side to side), something most flying machines can’t do. Their blades create drag and lift forces that work against gravity.
- Ask kids to get into small groups and then introduce the challenge: Construct a helicopter, using the materials provided, that reaches the ground slowly and safely, or moves sideways for a long distance.
Brainstorm & Build:
- Give students 10 minutes to brainstorm and agree on a design as a group before they construct their helicopters. Have students draw out sketches of possible designs. Make sure to approve designs.
- Once brainstorming is finished, let students build their helicopters for 15-20 minutes.
Plan & Predict:
- Bring everyone together. Ask them to discuss how to test their designs against each other to see which design provides the most drag.
- Discuss how they will set up the tests so the designs can be usefully compared (use a stopwatch and tape to measure.)
- Before testing, have the students make predictions about which helicopters will drop to the ground the slowest or which will travel the furthest. Why?
Test:
- For testing, have students safely stand on top of a table or chair and drop their helicopters; make sure that students drop their helicopters from the same height.
- After dropping the helicopters, have the students fly their helicopters forward from the same height.
- Use a stopwatch and a measuring tape to help each student gather the data they need; use masking tape to mark where the helicopters land.
- While testing, have students write down results and observations. They should answer the following:
Interpret & Modify:
- After the tests, ask the kids to consider the results:
- If time permits, students can make modifications to their helicopters based on variables that they believe will improve their helicopter. Have them repeat all of the steps.
Wrap-up:
- Have a final discussion with students on their results, thoughts, and observations throughout the activity.
