Assess whether an area surrounding their program was designed to contribute to or reduce runoff.

For each youth, one envelope with a strip of:

Wax paper
Aluminum foil
Paper towels
Lined paper
Sandpaper
Sponge

For each youth:

Envelopes
Small paper cup of soil
Small paper cup of sand
Small paper cup of rocks or pebbles
Regular pencil
A green-colored pencil
A yellow-colored pencil
Blank paper, graphing paper if possible, but not necessary

For the facilitator:

Tape
Chart paper from previous activity

Read through the activity.

Setup video and audio.

Gather necessary materials.

Cut up the sheets used in the previous activity into small squares.
Place a square of each material into envelopes.
Create enough envelopes for each participating youth.
Place soil, sand, and rocks into paper cups.

Introductory Activity (10 minutes)
- Give each youth one envelope and the three paper cups.
- Have the youth separate the items into permeable and impermeable.
- Using the envelope as a base, ask the youth to make a small model of an area designed to keep water from the ground.
What is Runoff? (15 minutes)
- Post the chart paper created in the previous activity.
- Review the youths’ thoughts about what happens when water cannot reach the ground.
- Tell the youth that you will play a short video. As they watch, their goal is to see how well their thoughts align with scientific findings.
- Play the video, \"Sustainable Cities: Nature Based Solutions in Urban Design\" until minute 4:00.
- Have youth share what they accurately predicted as the effect of water running over surfaces and not soaking directly into the soil.
- Ask:
- Gather as a class and list pollutants one might expect to find outside, like trash, dog feces, pesticides, and oil.
- List each pollutant in the chart paper’s first column of the third row.
- For each item, create a symbol to represent the pollutant as a class.
Assessing the Outside (30 minutes)
- Tell the youth they’ll be assessing the area directly outside the program to determine whether it has been designed to contribute to or reduce runoff.
- Distribute paper, a regular pencil, a yellow-colored pencil, and a green-colored pencil.
- Once outside, give the following directions:
Closing Activity (5 minutes)
- Once back inside, give each youth a piece of tape and have them post their sketch.
- Ask:
- Collect the sketches for the next session.
