Ask kids to get into small groups and then introduce the challenge: construct a vehicle that goes straight and fast down the ramp using only gravity to propel it. Propose these questions: Has anyone ever seen a soap box derby car? A hot wheels car or even built their own car before? Can they describe or draw one? (Think of the different shapes, sizes and styles of cars.)
Challenge the kids to make a gravity vehicle using only the materials provided in order to race for speed and alignment. Allow individual students to approach materials and build a prototype that will test together later using a ramp to roll their cars.
Bring everyone together and ask them to discuss how to test their designs against each other to see which design provides fastest and best aligned. Discuss how they will set up the tests so the designs can be usefully compared (use a stopwatch, compare two at a time).
Before testing the cars, ask the kids to make predictions about which will go fastest, or be best aligned. Why?
Ask the kids to line up at a ramp*. Have each student start from the same spot. Make sure they have a paper to mark down the results of their test. *The ramp can be improvised. Use a stopwatch and a measuring tape to help each student gather the data they need. Questions for students to answer: How fast and how far did your car go? What will you do to improve your design and make it perform the criteria better?
After the tests, ask the kids to consider the results. Were they in line with their predictions? Why did one car perform better than another? Allow the kids to come up with and present possible explanations.
If there is time, students can make modifications to their car based on variables that they believe will improve it. Have them repeat all of the steps. They can record their times, speed, and make notes about their cars in an engineering design notebook or loose paper.
